SELMER, Tenn. (AP) - Four people died and up to 15 were injured after a drag racing vehicle at a car show lost control and drove into a large crowd of bystanders today.

Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesman Mike Browning said authorities are trying to determine what caused the vehicle to careen into the crowd at the Cars for Kids charity event in Selmer, located about 80 miles east of Memphis.

Browning did not know how many people had been brought to area hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

He said the vehicle has been described as a drag racing car, but he did not have more details yet about the vehicle.

Scott Henley, of Selmer, witnessed the accident and said the vehicle started burning off its tires, then began to fishtail and careened into a light pole before spinning around into the audience.

Selmer Police Chief Neal Burks said "bodies were flying into the air when it happened."

Cars for Kids holds several events throughout the nation and raises money for charities that help children in need, according to the charity's Web site.

About 40,000 to 60,000 people were expected to attend the weekend event in Selmer.

Sorry to hear about all that.

I know growing up we did some drag racing on the streets, but we did it out on a highway outside of town where there was no traffic and no people around to get hurt, except those of us who were racing. I lost a cousin on that same highway when he lost control of his vehicle while racing. That is when I woke up and decided that if I was going to race it would be on a track.

The only safe place to hold a drag race is at a drag strip.
