Austin Dillon, Ryan Blaney excel with top-10 Vegas finishes
Two of NASCAR’s young drivers enjoyed stellar outings in Sunday’s Sprint Cup Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Austin Dillon and rookie Ryan Blaney both finished in the top 10 on a day when the drivers faced wind, rain sprinkles and a sand storm over the course of the race afternoon.
Dillon, in his third Sprint Cup season, overcame a speeding penalty on pit road to finish fifth. It’s the best finish for he and his Richard Childress Racing team this season. He has finished ninth and 11th in the other two Cup races, marking a strong start to the year.
This race was a bit more of an adventure than some. Dillon was assessed a speeding penalty on Lap 150, was shown two laps down then one lap down after pit stops cycled through. He took the wave around to get back on the lead lap with 90 laps to go. He, along with eventual winner Brad Keselowski and runner-up Joey Logano, stayed out on the pit stop with 49 laps to go, restarting in third and holding on for his final finish.
How did he assess his rally from the setbacks?
“Just never giving up,” he said on the broadcast after the race. “It takes a lot of effort. These guys built such a fast race car. I did all I could there to get ourselves back in position, get back on the lead lap. [The] cautions fell perfect for us and we took a gutsy call there to take the wave around and get back on the lead lap and see if caution would come out and it did right in our window. Things fell our way there for sure.”
While Dillon, 25, did say that he thinks it could have been an even better day for the team if not for the wind, he offered an optimistic outlook for the races to come.
“I think you’ll see us in Victory Lane before the season is over,” he said.
“This was really satisfying,” he said. “It was a good day for us. We needed a good finish after last week and it is nice to go out here and we all had fast cars. … We were able to drive up through the field early and made it better throughout the day. We had some spectacular late runs but we'd give up a little too much early and we couldn't ever get back what we lost. It's a great day.”
He spoke highly of his team and his car — and, like Dillon, saw promise for the future with the performance.
"The car is always extremely fast,” he said. “The Wood Brothers do a great job and we have to thank Penske for all of their support. The team's growing together. They're learning and so am I, and hopefully this is a good way to get our season going here."
