SONOMA, Calif. -- Nextel Cup Series points leader Jeff Gordon and defending series champion Jimmie Johnson, both of the Hendrick Motorsports stable, have failed inspection at Infineon Raceway.

The cars of neither Gordon, the defending race champion, nor Johnson will be allowed to practice or qualify Friday.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said both cars "failed the initial inspection ... as a result of body modifications found to be outside NASCAR tolerances. The front fender [of both cars] was modified outside of NASCAR regulations. They did not meet the C2 template inspection."

According to Poston, Hendrick Motorsports' No. 5 and No. 25 cars, for Kyle Busch and Casey Mears, passed inspections.

Poston added, "both teams have an opportunity to repair and resubmit their cars" for inspection by the end of the day Friday. "Assuming they pass inspection, they can practice [Saturday] and start at the rear of the field [Sunday]," he said.

Well, both cars are out of the same part of the shop at Hendrick (24 and 48 in one; 5 and 25 in the other). Doubt it was intentional. Probably a case like Dale Jr. had at Darlington (I think it was Darlington). Still, not good. Probably 100 points.

Gordon was laughing about it (guess you can do that with a 270 something point lead), said wished he had known, he could have just stayed home an extra day with the baby!

He doesn't need the points, this was the race Martin was going to run anyways, gotta start from the back (if they start at all) ... I might just leave and go home ...

yeah. something tells me Mr. Hendrick is going to have a talk with somebody.
for both cars to be identical like that this is a design thing that somebody came up with to try.
wonder why they didn't do all four cars?

heyyy. maybe this is NASCARs way of making sure somebody else finally wins a COT race!
conspiracy theorists where are you?!?!?

Jeff Gordon Late Model Eldora Dirt Car 1:24th
JEFF GORDON / JG DIE-CAST

Before there was blacktop racing, there was dirt!!!. On June 6th, Jeff Gordon returned to his racing roots and joined several NASCAR Nextel Cup drivers to sling dirt at the famous Eldora Speedway. In the event called "Prelude to a Dream", Jeff drove his Dupont machine to a third place finish. The HMS Team Store is thrilled to offer the die-cast replica of this special car.
This car is available for pre-order only. It is scheduled to arrive in August and will not ship until that time.

I am going to say that Nascar won't fine either one of them. They will say that parking them was a stiff enough penalty. I guess we will wait and see.

My opinion on this is. I think if you on't make a qualifying attempt you should even start the race. Just because your in the top 35 doesn't mean you get a spot and don't qualify. If thats the case then why the hell do you even qualify. Looks like you would want to sit out each week and save your motor for the race. This is the stupidest crap I have heard of late. If you want to peanlize them for cheating then send there ass home. No matter who it is.

Yeah sit them out thats a wise idea, just think if Junior was sat out for sometihng like this, what problems NASCAR would have with his fans.

Anyway qualfying may have lost its luster over the years but it still has a purpose for pit selection and of course getting in the Bud Shootout. And quals are pretty key for this race, this isn't like Daytona or Talladega where float back up to the front in 5 laps, the worst starting spot for a winner here at Sonoma is 13th.
