Dale Earnhardt Inc. team owner Teresa Earnhardt appears to be questioning stepson Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s commitment to racing in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

The story in Thursday’s edition says Earnhardt Jr.’s contract with the team founded by his father, the late Dale Earnhardt, expires after the 2007 season, but Teresa Earnhardt expressed uncertainty about his future.

“Right now the ball’s in his court to decide on whether he wants to be a NASCAR driver or whether he wants to be a public personality,” the story quotes Teresa Earnhardt as saying.

Earnhardt Jr., who drives the team’s No. 8 Chevrolet in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series and finished fifth in the standings this season with one win, “was not available for comment” on the statement, the story said.

What more does she want? If I were a car owner of someone that finished 5th in points and was the most popular I don't think I could ask for much more.
DEI would collapse without Dale Jr.
well, lets say earnhardt jr get fired from dei and rcr hires him to drive the no.3 car. with goodwrench gone. who do you think his sponser would be?

You really think Bud wouldn't follow him... I mean come on Jr is a marketing force for them....and doesn't jr have a relationship with wrangler...didn't they sponser the 3 car?
a wrangler sponsored #3 that would be great to see :-D
Excellent points people, excellent points. Here's what I would like to see.

DEI is not what it could have been if Senior was still around. DEI would not be anything if not for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Dale Jr is continuously swamped with attention and constantly doing meet & greets and sponsor activities, even though he was gotten better control of the situation and had them cut back. If he didn't have all those other distractions, he probably could be a better driver, because there would be less on his mind. Teresa is a great businesswoman, but not a racer. She complimented Senior's racer instinct with her business instinct and it made for a great company. I say that Junior needs to go to RCR, let DEI fail and close...*TIMEOUT*...would he actually stay at DEI just so his father's company would not fold? Hmm.....*TIMEIN*...He should go to RCR, resurrect the #3. Budweiser would be right on his heels and would probably even work out a deal to allow a #3 Wrangler Jeans car to be run a couple times, even though they dislike special schemes. He needs Richard's guidance, he needs a man's guidance and who better than the man who helped guide Senior to 6 championships? I hope Teresa pisses Junior off and all that happens.

Yeah Jr at RCR would work much better, be cool with him and Harvick tearin' it up every week.
I don't know if it would work out or not. Seems like in Cup, he has struggled with any other crew chief but a Tony Eury. I don't think Bud could follow at first, depends on the contract, is the contract with Jr or DEI. They just can't leave in the middle of a contract. I definately think DEI would fold without Jr. Wrangler could follow I think. I don't think sponsorship would be a problem at all for Jr. RCR wants to bring in a 4th car and Jr would be a perfect addition, because Jr could easily bring in a sponsor.
i tend to agree with spool. dei goes down without jr. but i also agree with t. earnhardt about jr. and also a few others. jr. seems to have lost that edge, i thought, about 2 years ago. i felt the same about j. gordon 3 years ago. jarrett and labonte no longer seem to have that "edge'. eventhough all want to race. i think they have made a fortune, and possibly don't want to go out and get themselves hurt or worse. they don't need the money for sure. but love the headlines. it's the young drivers who really go for it. and they are dangerous as we know, with out jr., gordon, martin, burtons, rudd, on the track to keep them straight. and sorry......but i think t. stewart is the biggest hippocrite on the track. he blasts the young drivers then does the same bonehead things himself. the older drivers i mentioned about, should have a long talk with stewart and let him realize, be an example, not a premadona.
kenseth, i can't figure that guy out. or the biff either really.

believe, i'm not sure some of these drivers, including jr., can go anywhere and get that edge back. money and headlines rule. winnig now and then or a pole is all these big names need now. gordon and earnhardt, jr. don't need to win another race. they both have money and fame for life. but, for different reasons.

As far as I am concerned, Jr. has too much on his table at DEI. Theresa is in charge but Jr. still has a say and too much responsibility at this point in his career, this is only his 6th Year in the Cup. You also have to realize he was thrown into this after only 1 Complete year in the Cup!!!

What I would like to see is Jr. move to a new team, any team, for 1 year. Just to prove to Theresa that it is not a fluke.
He has a team that would probably move with him, but could they?
If he would move, could he communicate enough with his team to be competitive??
Would Budweiser put too much pressure on him to stay???
Would Wrangler have enough to take him away from Bud???

There are way too many unkowns too answer at this point, but I would not disagree with Jr. leaving DEI at this point. I think DEI is a great Busch Series Competitor, but just does not have what it takes to make a Cup Champ as of this point. They do not do enough research, look at how HORRIBLE they were at the 1-1/2 Mile tracks up til this year!!!!
It's not all the Driver, it's the entire team!!!!
Look at the STRUGGLES of TRUEX Jr. this year, obviously there is more than what we know at this point!!!

wasn't gordon thrown into this with only one year of busch? and was winning the winston cup 3 or 4 years later? i can't buy jr. being thrown into anything. he could've said no anytime. if anyone pushed him, it was fan pressure, and he loved that. but fans don't win nextel cups. ask jeff gordon or matt kenseth.

Jeff had two years of Busch under his belt before moving up into Cup.
didn't jr. have a couple also? possibly not 2 full seasons.
either way. what else has he won, other than races? and jj has won more than jr. in 4 years in cup.
fans can defend jr. all you want. it holds no water till he wins a nextel cup, and alot more races. he's got fans. not the cup.i find it funny people back someone who has won less than bobby labonte, or a few others.dale jarrett for instance. matt kenseth. the list goes on of much better drivers.

eventually, you have to say, hey, this guy lacks something that stewart, gordon, johnson, kenseth, sr., and so many other have or had. root for jr., and keep being frustrated but stop the complaining. you choose to keep rooting and critisizing the guy.

at least the broncos won 2 super bowls. and the ravens won one in like their 4th year.

He will before Peyton Manning wins a Super Bowl ring!
your wrong, if Peyton ever gets one it will be before Jr gets a championship ring, I know you dont think he will ever get one and maybe your right, but Jr wont ever get a championship either

yea, but gordo only had to concentrate on driving and was not inindated (sp) with all the other responsabilities as part owner of the company.
